International Relations & Diplomacy

The International Relations and Diplomacy programme at Peter University, Achina/Onneh in Anambra State, is a four year BSc. programme, which started at the inception of the University in 2022. The programme is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of International politics, international institutions, and diplomatic practices. As a key discipline within the Department of Political Science, this programme prepares students to be able to analyse international affairs, negotiate conflicts, and contribute to global peace and development.

Overview

International Relations & Diplomacy

Four-year B.Sc. programme in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences.

Programme Overview

Launched in the 2022/2023 academic session, the programme provides rigorous training in international politics, institutions, and diplomatic practice. Students learn to analyse global affairs, manage conflict, and contribute to peace and sustainable development.

The curriculum integrates theory and practice across Foreign Policy Analysis, International Law, Global Security, and Economic Diplomacy. Delivered by an experienced faculty, it builds critical thinking, negotiation, and communication skills for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, policy analysis, and global governance.

Ideal for students committed to understanding global affairs, fostering cooperation among states, and exercising ethical leadership.

Programme History

The programme is a core offering of the Department of Political Science. It leads to the award of B.Sc. International Relations and Diplomacy after four years of full-time study.

Pioneer Leadership: Mr. Emeka Ogbuozobe (Acting Head of Department) and Mr. Ndubuisi Nwaedozie (Pioneer Coordinator). Fr. Emefiena Ezeani served as pioneer Acting Dean.

Pioneer Teaching Staff: Fr. John Mark Okafor, Ebele Jacinta Obijiaju, Fr. Gerald Kene Ejimbeonwu, Fr. Modestus Anyaegbu, Fr. Kingsley Ibeh, and Fr. Chidi C. Mmaduekwe.

Current Leadership: The programme advances under the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Professor Emmanuel Umezinwa.

To equip students with analytical tools and practical knowledge for effective diplomatic practice and informed engagement with international affairs.

To graduate competent diplomats and analysts who advance just, peaceful, and cooperative relations among nations.

To form intellectually sound, confident graduates of international standing, capable of critical analysis of contemporary global challenges.

Aims and Objectives

In line with NUC CCMAS standards, the programme aims to:

  1. Develop understanding of IR theories and their application at national and international levels.
  2. Provide broad, balanced knowledge and practical skills in international relations.
  3. Build capacity to apply theory and analytical tools to solve real-world international problems.
  4. Train competence in fieldwork, data collection, analysis, and coherent presentation.
  5. Prepare graduates for advanced study in International Relations and related multidisciplinary fields.
  6. Foster appreciation of IR's role in political, economic, and social development and in maintaining global peace and security.

Admission Requirements

UTME Entry

Minimum JAMB cut-off; pass university screening; five credit passes at SSCE/WAEC/NECO or equivalent (including English Language and Mathematics) in not more than two sittings.

Direct Entry

Five credit passes including English and Mathematics, with at least two at Advanced Level; or four credits with at least three at Advanced Level. Relevant Diploma holders in Social Sciences may be considered.
