Establishment & Historical Background

The Department of Mass Communication, Peter University, Achina/Onneh, was established during the 2022/2023 academic session. The department is domiciled within the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences and awards the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Mass Communication to successful candidates upon the completion of a rigorous four-year programme.

At its inception, the Mass Communication programme at Peter University adopted the BMAS/CCMAS course structure obtained from the Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, which serves as the parent university, ensuring academic standards and curriculum quality.

👨‍🏫 Academic Staff History & Timeline

2023/2024 – First Academic Staff PIONEER

Mrs. Ebele Obiajuju joined as the first academic staff member of the department.

2024/2025 – Second Staff & First Acting HOD APPOINTMENT

Dr. Ogai Joseph was employed as the second academic staff member and was later appointed as the first Acting Head of Department.

Second Semester 2024/2025 – Graduate Assistants NEW HIRES

Two additional academic staff members joined as Graduate Assistants: Mr. Agbachukwu Paschal Ifesinachi and Miss Onyinye Nwammuo.

November 2025 – Five Additional Staff FACULTY EXPANSION

The university employed five additional academic staff members: Professor Angela Nwammuo (Visiting Professor), Associate Professor Uche Ekwugha (Adjunct, Current Acting HOD), Dr. Ben Ogbonna, Mrs. Obi Ifeyinwa, and Mr. Victor Okorie.

✅ NUC Accreditation & Resource Verification

📋 Resource Verification

During the 2024/2025 academic session, the department underwent a rigorous resource verification exercise and emerged successful during the university-wide review of operational licences conducted by the NUC.

🏆 Full Accreditation

In November 2025, during the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic session, the department underwent its first full accreditation exercise by the NUC and recorded a successful outcome.

📡 Training Facilities & Media Studio

Current Facility: Mini Radio & Television Studio

The department currently operates a mini radio and television studio, which is temporarily housed within the University Sports Complex. This facility provides students with hands-on training in broadcasting, production, and media presentation.

⭐ PROPOSED: FULLY FUNCTIONAL RADIO STATION

The university management has proposed the establishment of a fully functional radio station on campus. The proposed station is expected to serve a dual purpose:

  • 📡 As a practical training facility for Mass Communication students
  • 💰 As a revenue-generating commercial radio station for the university

This initiative will significantly enhance practical learning and provide students with real-world broadcasting experience.
